For those unaware, the Liverpool connection runs through the family itself: the boys’ mother, Zi Lan Liao, grew up in the city and it’s where her father established the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra - in which John T and Charlie were soloists.

Mystic Liverpool is psychedelic in the truest sense - a mystical, immersive journey into songs that have always pointed east, now heard through the family that lives between those worlds.

The CD digipak comes with an 8-page booklet featuring liner notes by Jah Wobble. The album draws on Wobble’s signature dub bass, John T’s drums, Chinese percussion and yangqin, with Charlie’s erhu and vocals.

Having became famous as the original bassist for Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late 1970s, his heavy, hypnotic low-end bass lines helping define the post-punk and dub-inflected sound of the band’s early records, Jah opens his new album on the atmospherically charged Tomorrow Never Knows and an intricately sewn Strawberry Fields Forever and then comes the formidable Within You Without You, a bass-led beauty in the form of the shimmering I Am the Walrus and an affecting Norwegian Wood.

Along next is the grooved rock of Blue Jay Way and the Asia-imbibed brilliance of The Inner Light and they are in turn backed beautifully by the impassioned lightness of Love You To, the new set rounding out on the reverberating indulgence of Flying, coming to a close on the pop-tastic Rain.
