For those unaware, in 1990 the internationally renowned NDR radio orchestra (now the NDR Radiophilharmonie) invited the peerless singer and lyricist Norma Winstone MBE to collaborate on a broadcast session.

She immediately turned to pianist and arranger Steve Gray and working with the superb radio band they created together an unforgettable, beautiful suite of songs including classic repertoire and modern gems featuring Norma’s own lyrics.

This previously unreleased 1990 recording from ECM and Edition Records artist and British jazz royalty, vocalist Norma Winstone, opens on the whispery elegance of the titular A Timeless Place and then we get the emotive Faraway Places, the flourishing Your Smile, then both an adoring I Loves You Porgy, and a gentle hipsway that drives Life In the Modern World.

Along next is the quietly hushed tones of Wait ’til You See Him and the impassioned A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing, and they are in turn backed seamlessly by the scat-hued, rhythmically resplendent The Glide, the veritably cinematic Sea Lady and the strident fare of Ladies In Mercedes, the set coming to a close on the decadent Too Late Now.
