For those not in the know, born in Philadelphia, with a degree (in both Music and Dance) from Temple University, Judi Silvano made her way to New York City in 1976 where she launched her career as an improviser — of dance at first. But jazz would not be far behind.

What Judi Silvano has been able to accomplish thus far gives the appearance of multiple artists’ careers strung together — but it’s all Judi. In fact, she’s always got a new project ready to fly, oftentimes dovetailing and overlapping her previous efforts.

Her latest album it entitled First Flight and comes out via her Judi Silvano’s Garden Winds project, which features herself (voice, percussion) and both Haruna Fukazawa (flutes) and Claire de Brunner (basson).

With nature being an ever-present theme across the album, gifted vocalist Judi Silvano opens her new recording on the willowy title cut First Flight and then comes the soaring Gathering, the engaging Flock of Three and both the more strident fare of Stravinsky and the emphatically-charged Flower Talk.

Along next is the more soulfully driven Passing Through which is in turn backed seamlessly by the emotively sewn melodies of This Morning and the lucid gossamer of On the Deck, the set rounding out on the affecting Beaverbrook, coming to a beautiful close with the all-embracing rhythms and harmonies of Coming Together.
