Title - Second Life
Artist - Jason Kao Hwang - Human Rites Trio

For those not in the know, on Second Life, violinist Jason Kao Hwang and his Human Rites Trio - with bassist Ken Filiano and drummer-percussionist Andrew Drury - perform four extended pieces filled with inspired improvising and inventive arrangements.

The interplay between the musicians in the colorful structures results in dynamic music that bring forth some of the most formidably structured, impassioned and studiously crafted music that you will have heard in decades.

Raised during the “melting pot” era of assimilation, Jason did not learn Chinese from his immigrant parents, only English. When his parents spoke in Chinese to each other, he would listen intently to glean meaning from their inflection, rhythm, and timbre. Therein, Jason has always imagined this musical experience of the Chinese language as the foundation of his creative instincts.

1. Galaxies Twist Under Before It [10:53]
2. What to Keep, What to Let Go [9:40]
3. Second Life [13:17]
4. Ricochet [11:48]

With this recording featuring the three masterful musicians of Human Rites Trio inspiring and challenging each other in surprising and memorable fashion, they open on the studious supple Galaxies Twist Under Before It before bringing us an aching yearn that threads throughout What to Keep, What to Let Go, then we are gifted the veritably cinematic rhythmic scope of the titular Second Life, the new set concluding on the compelling, engaging and impassioned eclectic jam of Ricochet.
