'Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure: Combo'
(Ashley Tisdale, Cameron Goodman, Lauren Collins, Austin Robert Butler, et al / 2-Disc Blu ray+DVD / NR / 2011 / Disney)

Overview: Just how fabulous do you have to be to make it big in the Big Apple? One aspiring diva is about to find out...the hard way! Ashley Tisdale shines in this totally captivating comedy. After a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, Sharpay Evans (Tisdale) sets off for the bright lights of NYC, convinced instant fame and fortune are in the bag (designer bag, that is). But theatre's a dog-eat-dog world, as she and Boi discover when they encounter the devious owner of a pampered pooch named "Countess" and a scheming Broadway starlet who will do anything to crush the competition.

Blu ray Verdict: I have been a fan of the High School Musical series, mostly for their camp appeal, and Ashley Tisdale's performances as Sharpay were usually the high points. This character's journey to Broadway is the focus of the spin-off chapter, and fans will get a treat as they watch an act or two of reliable self-absorbed princess humor, then some warmly familiar character growth.

Will this movie surprise anyone? No. If you found the character irritating, will this movie change your mind? Nope. But if you want to spend time with the one character who didn't conform to the ensemble's squeaky-clean image, this is a great way to do it.

That all said, Ashley Tisdale is endearing in what could easily be a thoroughly unlikeable characer in the wrong hands. I also like the chemistry between her and Austin Butler; they balance each other very well. The rivalry between Sharpay and Roger is enjoyable, but really could have been developed a little more to better comic effect. It also appears that much of this movie was actually shot in New York City, giving it more of an authentic flavor.

As a bonus, her adorable teacup Yorkie, Boi, gets a much bigger role, and though I usually hate cutesy dog movies, his antics fit the tone of the story and brought several laughs. [MC] This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

• BLOOPERS (on Blu-ray & DVD) - Ashley Tisdale and the cast cut up on set
• AUSTIN CAM (on Blu-ray & DVD) - Actor Austin Butler, who plays student filmmaker Petyon, not only shoots scenes needed for the movie, but takes his camera behind the scenes to see how Ashley Tisdale has fun between takes
• THE EVOLUTION OF SHARPAY (on Blu-ray only) - Ashley Tisdale traces the development of her bigger-than-life character from the High School Musical movies through her current movie
