'Diana Krall - Live In Rio Special Edition'
(Diana Krall / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2009 / Eagle Rock)
Overview: This concert program captures a performance by jazz vocalist Diana Krall, recorded live in Rio de Janeiro, in November 2008. Performing in the home of the bossa nova style, Krall performs many tracks from her bossa nova-inspired album Quiet Nights.
DVD Verdict: As we well know, Diana Krall, OC, OBC (if we're gonna be proper about it!) is a Grammy Award-winning Canadian jazz pianist and singer. But, she is also known for her contralto vocals ... and her sense of humor (although not here tonight!) I mean, come on now, aside from the fact she can tell a good story she's married to Elvis Costello himself!
Beloved Krall fans will probably rank her Paris concert the best live performance, but this "Live in Rio" is a very nice, well executed nights work also. Indeed, as I'm sure all Krall fans already are aware, many of the songs come from the 'Quiet Nights' album, including the title track.
Recorded live at Vivo Rio in Rio De Janeiro in 2008, this concert includes a blend of standards and bossa nova songs, with the selections including "Let´s Fall in Love," "Cheek to Cheek," "Too Marvelous for Words," "Every Time We Say Goodbye, "The Boy from Ipanema," and the set opener, "I Love Being Here with You."
Later in the show, Krall explains how much, and why she loves Rio and how much she looked forward to this concert. She then males them aware that she is also looking forward to returning here with husband Elvis Costello and their twins - when the kids are old enough!
Now, anyone that's seen Krall live in action knows that, bless her she isn't anywhere close to being a showwoman. No high temp'd body language or foot stomps here. Not even much in the way of hi-nrg or rugged love for a few facial twists and turns, in all honesty. And her audience is seated in such a manner that her stage faces a large room that´s set up with banquet-style tables, each lit with candles, the audience members sat still, quiet, gently drinking their expensive (I'd guess) cocktails.
And so, what is so 'special' about this new 2-Disc release? Well, it not only contains all the bonus material from the standard DVD ('Conversations,' an interview with Krall and her band, and 'The Boy From Ipanema² promotional film), but a second disc with extra live material recorded in Canada, Spain and Portugal. The 5-track 'Rooftop Sessions,' which was only available on the Blu-ray release, and the promotional film for Quiet Nights completes the disc. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
'Conversations' - an Interview with Krall and her Band
'The Boy From Ipanema' - Promotional Film
'Rooftop Sessions' - 5 Track Live Performance
