'Gary Moore: The Definitive Montreux Collection'
(Gary Moore / 3-Disc DVD / PG-13 / 2010 / Eagle Rock)

Overview: Gary Moore is one of the best rock and blues guitarists ever to come out of Ireland. Following stints in Skid Row, Thin Lizzy and Colosseum II he began a hugely successful solo career in the eighties. Gary Moore has been a frequent visitor to Montreux over the years and this 2DVD set brings together his very best performances from five different concerts between 1990 and 2001.

DVD Verdict: An ambassador to the electric guitar, Gary Moore is (still) the most progressive musician around today. His unmistakeable, gravely-rugged voice along with his astute guitar work has rocked audiences around the world for many, many years.

Having been a frequent visitor to Montreux over the years, this 2 DVD / 1 CD set brings together his very best performances from five different concerts between 1990 and 2001. Indeed, Disc One contains 1990 and 1995, whilst Disc Two contains 1997, 1999 and 2001.

The sheer power and guitar-work quality of Moore's work live is way better (in my opinion) than any over-polished studio work, and these DVDs/CD show that, note perfect, at each turn. The set actually spans 11 years of Montreux work - I know, incredible, yes! - with the 1990 portion a delicious sampling from early Montreux work, showcasing his early blues influences.

The controlled and beautiful honed workmanship for the blues in the 1995 section is yet another step of musical evolution, the rock side of things seaping through before your very eyes/ears ... and come the 1997 portion of the set, well, this is truly a wondrous gem from the 'Dark Days in Paradise' era. This is an absolutely superb set, and one not to be missed.

A near-complete return to the blues genre comes in the 1999 section is a pure guitar/soul driven moment, with the last section, the one performed in 2001 is basically a showcase of work from his 'Back to Blues' album.

And so, in conclusion, 'Gary Moore: The Definitive Montreux Collection' is a showman at his live finest, a man in total control of his craft, and is a must-have for all blues/rock fans - ones that know/believe that the guitar is the true path to their soul. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
