'Exile'
(John Simm, Jim Broadbent, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2012 / BFS Entertainment)

Overview: After his successful London career implodes, journalist Tom Ronstadt (John Simm, 'Life on Mars') returns to his hometown in Lancashire for the first time in 18 years and finds his father Sam (Jim Broadbent, 'The Iron Lady') in the grip of Alzheimer's.

DVD Verdict: After losing his job, Tom (Simm) goes back to his sisters house - to stay with her and their dad. But, upon his arrival he quickly discovers that not only has his dad got the onsets of Alzheimer's, but there seems to be something hidden in his own youth - something that people are still willing to kill to keep hidden!

In a house full of memories, and not usually good ones, Tom is fighting a losing battle each night with regard deeply-seated memories of a certain file, a last night spent in the house beating, and his love for the local bar maid - who is also his best mate's wife!

His sister is incredible in her supporting role. Taking the limelight when it is called for, hovering in the background when it's time for Simm to work his deductive magic (usually when he has a whiskey in his hand), she nearly takes the award for best actor here. But now, that actually goes to Jim Broadbent, who plays the mentally-ailing father.

Not as white-haired as the cover art would have you believe, his acting is spot on, is mesmerizing to behold, and saddening to watch. He is the key to unlocking the mystery of the hidden file, and so along with his best mate (after a punch up to sort things out re: his wife) they set out to bring whoever it is who thought they'd goten away with it to their knees! A tale in two chapters, it reveals personal secrets, reality-based scenarios, and an ending that may not be fully accomplished, but will satisfy nonetheless. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
