'In a Glass Cage [Blu-ray]'
(Gunter Meisner, David Sust, et al / Blu ray / NR / (1987) 2011 / Cult Epics)

Overview: Klaus (Günter Meisner of The Boys of Brazil) is an ex-Nazi, a doctor whose war-time post in a concentration camp enabled him to commit the most appalling sex crimes against boys. After the war, living incognito in Spain, he again gives in to his depraved desires, until shame and despair drive him to an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Now confined to his room and kept alive on an iron lung, he is ministered to by his resentful wife Griselda (Marisa Paredes of All About my Mother) and her daughter Rena (Gisela Echevarina).

Blu ray Verdict: In truth, and aside from the fact this film has taken waaaay too long to come out on Blu ray, the viewers like or dislike for 'In a Glass Cage' will hinge on their individual gut reaction to the opening scene. I mean, I truly think that these harrowing opening moments are the crux to whether or not they even go any deeper into the film. Which would be a shame if the didn't, but understandale, none the same.

The scene is that of a young boy, nude and beaten who is now strapped up by his arms, hanging in a warehouse. His attacker is Klaus (Günter Meisner), a former Nazi officer - and one very confused individual, to be sure. Sadly, for the viewer who may already be regretting taking on this visual masterpiece, the boys life is put to an end with a swift smack to his head by a wooden board.

Klaus, being confussed (as noted above) then decides a suicide attempt on himself by jumping out the window! He doesn't succeed. Month's later and Klaus is confined to an iron lung (save for his head sticking out), looked after by his wife Griselda (Marisa Paredes), and daughter Rena (Gisela Echevarria).

Cue the mysterious arrival of a mysterious young man named Angelo who enters Klaus' room. Convincing the old man to accept him as his new nurse (despite the fact the he obviously doesn't have any nursing skills), it's either a blessing or a curse for Klaus' wife - who loves her husband, but was herself about to give the role up.

This is where the story begins to take off, becoming even more disturbing! Without giving too much away, Angelo and Klaus form an exceptionally disturbing bond. Playing bizarre mind games consisting mostly of violent and sexual undertones, Angelo also spends some of his time reading from Kalus' journals. Never one for always adhereing to the whims of his bed-ridden patient, at other times he messes with the oxygen levels of Klaus' tank too!

Oh, and just so you're prepared, he also humps Klaus and (get ready for it ...) masturbates on his face!! And yet, at the heart of this story, Angelo overly describes to Klaus how he wants to be just like him! Indeed, how he'd like to 'pick up' exactly where he had left off!

And so, for the record, 'In A Glass Cage' is a very difficult film to watch, (please) trust me. Filled chock-full of scenes of homo-erotic behavior, hands that trail meanacingly down faces time after time, 'In a Glass Cage' is gonna be touch to get through, but from an avid film-making perspective, will definitely be worthwhile. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.66:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs, and has been remastered for this Blu ray 2011 release.
