'Sarah Jane Adventures: Complete Fifth Season'
(Elisabeth Sladen, Daniel Anthony, Tommy Knight, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2012 / BBC Video)

Overview: Created by Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, Season Five sees the bubbly Sky, the Starchild given to Sarah Jane by the Doctor to look after, settle into Bannerman Road and discover she has telekinetic powers ... although she has no idea how to use them!

DVD Verdict: OK, well, it is VERY hard to watch this latest series of 'Sarah Jane Adventures' due to the sad fact that this fifth season was the last filmed in the series of episodes of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' - because star Elisabeth Sladen unexpectedly passed away in April 2011. That said, I'm glad to see that the BBC actually broadcast this final set of episodes in full and now BBC America has made them available around the world on DVD - for all the devoted fans of Ms. Sladen and the show.

Series 5 consists of six episodes (which I'm informed was just half of the originally-planned twelve), and they make up three stories. The first is Sky, the second The Curse of Clyde Langer, and the last one The Man Who Never Was. The newly-intriduced character Sky sadly doesn't have much time to develop due to the shortened amount of episodes filmed, but I'm sure a new series will evolve from this show - and allow her character to do just that thereafter.

Anyway, of these three stories I think The Curse of Clyde Langer is possibly one of the best of the entire run of the series. I'm serious. It includes some deep, powerful some might say acting from Daniel Anthony, which I've wanted to see for quite some time now, in truth! And, for those fearing that we are left with major cliffhangers that will now never get answered, fear not! Be rest assured that we do get a heartfelt close at the end that appropriately concludes 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' - thankfully.

In closing, and as a long-time fan of the original 'Doctor Who' adventures (back to the b/w days, in fcat) my favorite Doctor was also the loveable Tom Baker - and guess who was his fiesty companion? Yup, the always-loveable roving-reporter, Sarah Jane Smith (aka Elizabeth Sladen, of course). Hence, I've always thought that 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' were some of the better Doctor Who spin-offs. They sat easier with me than the franticness of, say, 'Torchwood.'

And sure these Adventures were meant for a far younger audience than myself, but I (and my friends) still found them hugely entertaining, an enjoyable series at its finest - and one I still look forward to re-watching on DVD! This is a Wide Screen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
