'Lennon Naked'
(Christopher Eccleston, et al / DVD / NR / 2010 / BBC Video)

Overview: Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Heroes) stars as one of the most enduring and enigmatic figures of the 20th Century, John Lennon, in this riveting drama. One quarter of “The Fab Four,” peace activist, visual artist, and author, John Lennon was a man whose personal life was never short on drama, intrigue and eventually, conspiracy. Thirty years after his death, Lennon Naked presents an inside look at the hugely popular musician as he moved from a Beatle to an icon.

DVD Verdict: This was a very good, and very moving piece of drama. Charting John Lennon's life from 1967 to 1971 and his exodus from the UK Lennon Naked was a moving and thought provoking piece that made you look at him as a person rather than as just a musical icon. Made you look at him as a person with faults and human foibles; watching as he repeated the mistakes of his father with his own son.

Christopher Eccleston was a joy to watch and despite the accent seeming out of place he held it very well and there wasn't a moment that you doubted who he was playing. The interaction with his father, Christopher Fairbanks, was the highlight, the father/son relationship or lack thereof being the whole drive behind the film.

As to Christopher Ecclestone's age, as seems to have come up in many conversations I've had with fellow Lennon fans/friends, it doesn't show that much or take away from a sterling performance.

The cut-away dream like scenes that run throughout and become more apparent as the film runs it course give you an understanding of Lennon's motivation throughout.

It also makes the film look pretty damn good too. And the music through out, snippets of The Beatles and John Lennon's own works, are as brilliant as ever they were.

Basically, if you have an interest in the Beatles or just have a passing interest in John Lennon wondering what all the fuss was about then give this film a view. [SS] This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
