'Iron Maiden - En Vivo!' (UMe)
(Iron Maiden / 2-DVD / NR / 2012 / UMe)

Overview: 'En Vivo!', recorded on April 10, 2011, in front of over 50,000 ecstatic fans at the Estadio Nacional, Santiago, during the Round The World In 66 Days leg of The Final Frontier World Tour, is a 2-DVD set that captures a monumental performance from probably the best live heavy metal band of all time!

DVD Verdict: Iron Maiden have released four (4) DVDs in recent years: Rock in Rio, Death in the Road, Flight 666 and this brand new 2-DVD set entitled En Vivo. On average, each DVD has about 17 songs. Nearly half of them are the same in all the titles though. Which is weird as you'd expect more of a greatest hits package some nights. But that just doesn't seem to happen with them any more. So, please understand this is NOT a greatest hits DVDs. Especially as the tour was backing their just-released new CD at the time, The Final Frontier.

The ariel shots of this massive outdoor stadium concert are excellent, really showcasing the massive support that these boys from England still possess - even though they are all knee-deep into their '50s! Wearing a Psych ward t-shirt (once his red battledress was removed) and beanie, Dickinson's voice is still there. A little less shrill, shall we say, but nevertheless as spot on as you'd like it to be for an original lead singer after all this time.

But, the truth is (and not just for me, as I've asked), today's technology allows 20 cameras to take over the stage. Shooting from all possible angles, with zooms that fly in and out, up and down, from faces to guitars to drums, to crowd, sure not everything is caught/used in the editing bay, but we just don't ever get to see a musician playing or singing! The multiple cameras constantly switch from one image to another every two seconds. Seriously, this irritated me so much that I started to have to look away for fear of breaking into a seizure!

I mean, I like to see the musicians playing. Sometimes it gets so bad that when we have a guitar solo, it's only right at the end when the camera finally hovers on the guitarist - the rest of the time it's been flirting with every band member, most all the front row, and some ariel shots that give a whole new meaning to experiencing vertigo! Oh, and I could do without the multiple split screens too, sorry!

And so Iron Maiden run through en mass of their collective hits and fan favorites (17 songs - five from the early 80's, from Iron Maiden, The Number of the Beast, and Piece of Mind, one each from Powerslave and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, from 1984 and 1988 respectively, one song from the 90's, the title track to Fear of the Dark, three songs from the early 2000's, and six from The Final Frontier) and all the time Dickinson runs the entire stage (literally), leaping, jumping, bounding, crouching like some demented adolescent high on K2!

Being that this was Iron Maiden's Final Frontier World Tour 2010-11, it saw the band circumnavigating the planet for the third time in their customized Boeing 757, Ed Force One! Piloted by lead singer Bruce Dickinson, and playing 98 shows in 36 countries to over 2 million fans, this DVD is an incredible sight to behold, but nothing we've not seen before from such an iconic metal band. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with a Bonus Disc 'Behind The Beast' featuring:

1. Behind The Beast Documentary
2. 'Satellite 15' & 'The Final Frontier' Promo Videos (Director's Cut)
3. The Making of 'Satellite 15' & 'The Final Frontier' Promo
4. The Final Frontier World Tour Show Intro
