'GCB - The Complete First Season'
(Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb, Jennifer Aspen, et al / 3-Disc DVD / NR / 2012 / ABC Studios)

Overview: Welcome, y'all, to ABC's 'GCB: The Complete First Season.' From Darren Star, creator of Sex And The City, and inspired by the devilishly fun novel, GCB dishes the dirt on the return of a former resident of an upscale Dallas community - a community she left with a lot of good riddance attached!

DVD Verdict: I have to say you instantly get the tone of this short-lived TV show when the always-delightful, always-perky, and always-sexy Kristin Chenoweth (along with a plethora of other highly-tanned female friends) welcome the "prodigal daughter" (Leslie Bibb) back to the upscale Dallas, TX lifestyle, by saying she hopes she's "back for good ... and not evil"; and then laughs!

It really is a HUGE shame this TV show (formerly titled 'Good Christian Bitches' and then 'Good Christian Belles') was not given a longer run, as it is quirky fun from start to finish. That said, I truly hate Leslie Bibb (as an actress) and have yet to figure out how she has even (supposedly) become one! Her acting, even here, is stiff, labored, unfunny (even when given funny lines!), and her lanky appeal is lost on me completely - and I'm a hot blooded male!

Anyway, moving on, together with the hilarious Chenoweth, the worrysome Bibb, and the always loveable Annie Potts, the rest of the wonderful GCB cast may well be filled out with bit parters but they all come together to make one hell (ooops, sorry!) of a show!

The basic (and I mean basic) premise is that after the conviction of her husband, a business man involved in a Ponzi-Scheme, Amanda (Bibb) returns to her hometown in Texas to live with her mother and children. Once there she quickly runs into her former classmates (Sharon, Cricket, and Heather) who she tortured; of course, and now-neighbor/old foe Carlene (Kenoweth). A woman who has had numerous plastic surgeries to butterfly into something as far removed from the acne-ridden, frizzy-haired teenager she once was, it is definitely Charlene who now runs the show.

So, Amanda and her teenage children move in with her 60-something mother Gigi Stopper (Potts), who soon tries to influence Amanda's parenting and style choices. Giving her advice about strategic maneuvering among these women though does prove useful! As you can guess, behind all the fake smiles and under all the overly-tanned bodies, Carlene and the others still resent her. Indeed, they don't believe she's changed and are out to drive her away.

Based on the "semi-autobiographical" novel Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin, the series actually debuted on ABC as a midseason replacement for 'Pan Am' last year. In a quirky, unfair twist of fate though, last month both series' were cancelled by ABC! And this despite GCB drawing 5.6 million viewers for its season finale! Oh, and not to give anything away, but watch out for some notable guest spot roles from such stars as Tom Everett Scott (as Andrew Remington), Donna Mills (as Bitsy Lourd), Sandra Bernhard (as Debbie Horowitz), and even Sheryl Crow ... as herself! These are all Full Screen Presentations (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

Episode Commentaries

Bloopers
Bigger in Texas
Living Large
Preaching to the Choir
