'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' (Combo Pack)
(Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, et al / 2-Disc DVD+Blu Ray / PG-13 / 2012 / Warner Home Video)

Overview: Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room... until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

DVD Verdict: Whilst, for my money, not as much fun as the first movie, 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' does indeed keep the darker side of fun going for its fans. Indeed, this second time around for both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is quickly established as a slick, stylish, romp of an adventure, sure. But, and again this is only my humble opinion, this time around it is actually the most amazing of performance cast by Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty which takes center stage. Sure Noomie Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) also co-stars and does an admirable job, but Harris is beyond incredible in his dark undertaking of the super villian!

That said, I truly think that Guy Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes is fast becoming a worn out formula. All the elements are there to make it entertaining, sure, but as in the first installment, this escapade isn't overly thrilling. Sherlock Holmes has been reinvented to become this zen taichi master with an uncanny sixth sense. The opening scenes of him badly dressed as an old china man is funny, and the slo-mo filming that Ritchie invented for Holmes is spot on, once again, but surely for another Holmes film they have to step it up a notch.

Funnily enough, even the relationship of Sherlock with Dr. Watson seems tedious. The good doctor isn't just a straight man for Sherlock to zing with one liners, which he himself tries to avoid. But, sadly, Law as Watson has become nothing short of his verbal punch bag. At times they reminded me more of Abbot and Costello!

In a blink and you'll miss it cameo, Rachel McAdams (The Vow) returns as Irene Adler, an important woman in Holmes' life. But as soon as she's here she's gone again, at the hands (kinda off screen) of Professor Moriarty. And finally, and yes, this has to be said, sometimes things just get too, well, too damn cute between our two heroes. I know the are they gay or are they not gay thing has been going on for years, but this so-called bromance between Holmes and Watson even at one point has them dancing together, somewhat ballroom style! Er, I wonder how would Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have felt about all this? This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
