(Paul Giamatti, Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, David Hornsby, et al / DVD / R / 2010 / Paramount)
Overview: Based on a true story, this comic tale of three would-be entrepreneurs set out to invent a rocket belt. The venturesome partnership soon takes an unhealthy toll as their mismatched personalities clash and some unexpected success lead to retaliations and kidnapping in this parable of American dreams and delusions.
DVD: Being that this film stems from an actor making the transition to feature filmmaking, 'Pretty Bird' is a very, very watchable, enjoyable film to behold. The actor-turned-filmmaker is a man called Paul Schneider ... and yes, while most all of you may not even know who that is (I didn't) he had a starring role in another Sundance film, David Gordon Green‘s 2003 romance 'All the Real Girls' and supporting roles in other films such as, 'Elizabethtown,' 'The Family Stone' and even 'The Assassination of Jesse James.'
'Pretty Bird' tells the story of Curtis Prentiss (Billy Crudup), a wannabe entrepreneur who enlists an old friend (David Hornsby) and an out-of-work aerospace engineer (Paul Giamatti) into trying to come up with a plan to build a rocket belt. Having raised enough money to now do such a thing, in various, respecable ways, they get to work.
But, as with most stories such as this, the path ahead is not smooth and all plain sailing - and internal turmoil ensues. The film itself is very colorful to watch and regardless of the speedbumps these guys come across, the ending is satisfying enough also.
'Pretty Bird' is storytelling at its Sundance finest, and is a great filmmaking debut for Schneider. Billy Crudup, as a man with smart ass personality is pefect for the role, and the always on form Paul Giamatti is as into is gruff role as Rick Honeycutt, ashe's ever been into any other role therein. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
