'That Girl - Season One'
(Marlo Thomas, Ted Bessell, et al / 5-Disc DVD / NR / (1966) 2006 / Shout!Factory)

Overview: 'That Girl' ran five seasons on ABC (following Bewitched) from 1966-1971 at a time when the three broadcast networks captured 95% of the viewing audience. Marlo Thomas’ character, Ann, was groundbreaking as an independent female forging her own way and forever changed the manner in which women were portrayed on TV, influencing the development of many of the other successful female-lead shows that followed, from 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' to 'Kate & Allie' and more.

DVD Verdict: Beautiful Marlo Thomas ranks among the most delightful sitcom heroines of all time - she was consistently nominated for the Best Comedy Actress Emmy honor for this series and should have won at least once. I loved this program growing up mainly because Marlo is so appealing in the part as the aspiring actress who can't seem to get a major break. 'THAT GIRL' was one of ABC's few major hits during the 1960's, there were far fewer ABC stations at the time and the best programs from the network were often picked up by NBC or CBS stations and shown in their non-network time slots, this is how I saw the show when I was young. As I grew up and became a fan of old movies, I could see the influence of the classic romantic comedies of Claudette Colbert and Carole Lombard on this show and of course 'THAT GIRL' was a pioneer TV program with a "working girl" heroine. Oh, and to hear once again Marlo gasp - now time and time again on repeat - in her slightly raspy voice, "Oh, Donald!" This is a really great set and one of the best TV on DVD sets Shout has ever released. It's so bright and colorful and full of bonus features. These are all Full Screen Presentations (1:78.1) and comes with the Special Features of:
All 30 half-hour episodes from the historic first season
Original 'That Girl' pilot episode
"The Making Of 'That Girl' Featurette" with Marlo Thomas

'That Girl' In New York with Marlo Thomas and Bill Persky
