'Home Movies - Season Four'
(Brendon Small, H. Jon Benjamin, et al / 3-Disc DVD / NR / 2006 / Shout! Factory)

Overview: TV series about the life of Brendon Small, an eight-year-old visionary who, using his friends Jason and Mellisa as actors, have managed to direct over a thousand homemade films. His parents are divorced, but it doesn't feel strange since so many other kids' parents are divorced. His friend Jason actually feels upset because his parents are still together. At school, he is taught soccer by his coach John McGirk, or as he calls him, "that weird Irish guy".

DVD Verdict: While 'Home Movies' is unquestionably funny and eclectic, the show also has a sweet side. That this warm and affectionate aspect never comes across as treacly is both a credit to the show's creators, and another reason why fans have taken the show to their hearts and helped bring it back from a premature demise in its first season. The fourth and final season of this half-hour cult hit comedy contains some of its most memorable episodes - "Camp," guest-starring They Might Be Giants as crappy music camp counselors, Brendon, Jason and Melissa’s rock-opera opus/debacle "The Wizard’s Baker" and Brendon's visit to the dark side in the classic "Those Bitches Tried To Cheat Me." One of my absolute favorite shows, I had to review this set. This final season contains some of my favorite episodes and characters. Everyone is at their best in this set and I'm glad I bought it. They make very creative use of commmentary tracks to do letter responses, a music improve and yes even comment on the episodes. One thing I love about 'Home Movies' are the well-developed plots, with frequent subplots which eventually intersect in unexpected ways (again the analogy to "Seinfeld" is appropriate). In truth, season four contains some of the most entertaining plots of any of the seasons. Of all the shows Adult Swim has ever aired, 'Home Movies' is at once the funniest, the most understated, and the most intelligent. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1:85.1) and comes with the Special Features of:
24 commentary tracks with cast, crew and special guests
"Home Movies Audio Outtakes Jukebox"
"The Beginning of the Genesis Of the Origins of Home Movies The Very First Sessions" with Loren Bouchard
Episode animatics
Bonus music CD featuring music from all four seasons
