'I Dream Of Jeannie - The Complete Second Season'
(Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman, et al / 4-Disc DVD / NR / (1965) 2006 / Sony Pictures)

Overview: Captain Tony Nelson is an astronaut. While on a mission, he discovered a mysterious bottle. Opening it, he released Jeannie (a Genie) who was so overjoyed at her release she promised to serve Captain Nelson. Nelson is unsure what to make of Jeannie, especially given that his work is highly secret and his superiors tend to keep a close eye on him.

DVD Verdict: In 1965, the ABC network once again turned to the prestigious Screen Gems television stable to create another sitcom along the lines of the hugely-successful 'Bewitched'. The result was 'I DREAM OF JEANNIE,' which went on to run for several years. Creator Sidney Sheldon closely followed the successful formula that had made 'Bewitched' a favourite for audiences, right down to the animated theme song, which divided critics who felt that JEANNIE was nothing short of a blatant rip-off. However, JEANNIE had enough style and charm to win over the viewers. Both 'Bewitched' and 'Jeannie' were the main ratings winners at ABC for several years, and were joined the following year by a third fantasy sitcom, 'The Flying Nun.' To recpa, Astronaught Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) crashes onto a deserted island following an aborted launch attempt. He happens across a mysterious bottle, and when he corks the lid, a puff of smoke reveals a beautiful genie called, what else, but Jeannie (Barbara Eden). When Tony returns to civilisation with Jeannie and her bottle in tow, he is barely prepared for the adventures and capers that lay ahead. The supporting cast was first-rate, including Hayden Rorke as Tony's stern boss Dr. Bellows; Bill Daily as best friend Captain Healy and Emmaline Henry as Dr Bellows' wife Amanda. Barbara Eden's husband at the time, Michael Ansara, had a great recurring role as Jeannie's jealous former love The Blue Djin. Later on during the series, Eden herself relished playing a second role, that of Jeannie's evil brunette twin sister. I have loved this show since I was a little girl and pretended that I was a Jeannie myself. Unfortunately, I never could manage to blink the house clean, although it was not due to a lack of trying! I particularly enjoyed the character of the suspicious Dr. Bellows who always believed he was on the pinnacle of discovering the enigma that shrouded Tony; his most popular line, when Tony and Jeannie had once again managed to outwit him and cause everyone else to wonder at Dr. Bellow's apparent stupidity was, "He's done it to me again." I also enjoyed the line he always spoke when something mysterious began to transpire around Tony which was, "It's happening again." Of course, as the show progressed into its second season poor Dr. Bellows once again became the target of Jeannie's misdirected magic as Major Nelson diligently tried to keep his comrades unaware of Jeannie's existence. Despite his greatest efforts, Jeannie still manages to bring trouble into the Nelson home with hilarious and unforgettable consequences! These are Full Screen presentations (1.33:1), has all the 31 second season episodes on 4 discs, and comes the Special Features of only Language Tracks in English, Portuguese and Spanish, along with Subtitles in both Portuguese and Spanish.
