'Married With Children - The Complete Fifth Season
(Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, et al / 3-Disc DVD / NR / (1987) 2006 / Columbia Pictures)

Overview: The Bundys are a stereotypical American family. Al is a shoe salesman who is fond of frequently reliving his doubtful 15 seconds of fame on the football field. Al is terrified of the all-to-frequent amorous advances his ditsy wife Peggy, a woman who must spend most of Al's wages at the salon and the mall. They have two children: Kelly, the stunning but superficial party animal, and Bud, who is too wrapped up in himself to realize his goal of "scoring" with a girl.

DVD Verdict: Learn the true secrets for domestic bliss from television's favorite dysfunctional family in "Married... with Children: The Complete Fifth Season". Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill) was once a popular high school football star but his life takes an unfortunate turn for the worse. Now, Al is a pitiful shoe salesman who constantly has to deal with his lazy wife Peggy (Pamela Segal), his rowdy kids Kelly (Christina Applegate) and Bud (David Faustino) and his bothersome neighbors Marcy (Amanda Bearse) and Jefferson (Ted McGinley). "Married... with Children" is the outrageously funny comedy sitcom that changed our view of the typical family comedy. Its edgy humor and great cast made the show one of the longest running comedy shows in the Fox Network. The fifth season features guest appearances by Pamela Anderson, Matt LeBlanc, Tia Carrere, B.B. King, Jerry Mathers and Dr. Joyce Brothers. This great box set includes such memorable episodes like "Al... with Kelly", "And Baby Makes Money", "Oldies and Young 'Uns" and "You Better Shop Around". And, just so we're all clear and up to date on this series, one of the original cast is now gone! I am speaking of David Garrison who left 'Married...With Children' in the middle of the sitcom's fourth season to continue broadway roles. It was written that Garrison's character Steve Rhoades, who had lost his job as an accountant, then unmercifully left his beautiful, endearing wife Marcy (Amanda Bearse) and became a forest ranger. So Marcy is still single until mid-season when she marries playboy Jefferson D'Arcy ('Happy Days' veteran Ted McGinley) in her sleep! (FYI - She woke up with a wedding ring on one of her fingers and not the same one she wore during her marriage to Steve!) So, the Bundys hold a backyard wedding for Mr. and Mrs. D'Arcy where Peggy (Katey Sagal) plays her accordion at the wedding! Episode hilarity ensues thereafter on a regular basis, but some of my stand-out favs include the Bundys in a brawl with another family of four during Labor Day weekend gridlock; The Bundys in court with a civil lawsuit against someone they had a road collision with. Al is prepared with a briefcase that will contain the lawsuit cash and Dr. Joyce Brothers, a former advice columnist, played the presiding judge; Al takes a job as a night watchman at his alma mater, Polk High School where Bud is a student and Kelly and Peggy are alumni of themselves; and there's the two-part "You Better Shop Around" (which is also available on 'Most Outrageous Episodes, Part 2') where The Bundys seek shelter in a supermarket and Al accidentally becomes the one millionth customer of the day! Then again, all the other episodes are great. McGinley was billed as a guest star this season, since he had not joined 'MWC' at the beginning, but he soon became a firm favorite amongst the fans. (FYI - He also guest-starred in the season 4 two-part episode "It's A Bundyful Christmas" which Fox aired as a whole on December 24,1989. McGinley's character was Norman Jablonski, who appeared in a dream that Al had. In the dream, Norman was the household patriarch instead of Al!) For fans of the dysfunctional Bundy family, "Married... with Children: The Complete Fifth Season" will satisfy your need for crude humor. All 25 episodes are presented in 1.33:1 full frame format. The video transfer on these three discs is brighter and cleaner than your average television rebroadcast. Its simple 2.0 Dolby Digital sound won't win any awards but gets the job done. Unfortunately, the 3-Disc set's doesn't include any special features. Despite the lack of supplemental material, "Married... with Children: The Complete Fifth Season" offers hours of entertainment! This is a Full Sceen Presentation (1.78:1) and comes with the Special Features of all 25 fifth season episodes on 3 discs.
