'Mulberry - The Complete Series'
(Karl Howman, John Bennett, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / (1992) 2006 / BBC Video)

Overview: Mulberry, the cheerful Cockney son of Death and Springtime, starts his "career" as the Grim Reaper's apprentice when he is sent to collect the acerbic and reclusive Miss Farnaby. He instead joins the staff in her creaky manor house, becomes her personal servant, and endeavors to help her enjoy life during the three month extension grudgingly granted by his dad. What will happen when winter ends and spring arrives? Will life go on?

DVD Verdict: I was very pleased to have found this DVD ready for review on my Editors desk, because even though I'm British I had no recollection of this show at all! Maybe it was an age factor. That said, the reason why I cannot be as overly pleased with this series as I wold loved to have been, is because of the way it ended. Death was what the show was based on and call me morbid, but I would have like to see Miss. Farnaby's reaction once she realized whom Mulberry really was. I feel as if the show left me hanging. Other sitcoms can do that such as Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served, and Keeping Up Appearances, because after each episode the problems have been solved. Mulberry had more of a plot and actually could be called a drama in my opinion. It's just too bad that the fans were left hanging as to what really happened. How do we not know if father death changed his mind about Miss. Farnaby's death and decided to give her more time? And if she did die after three months it would have been good to see her eulogized because she became alive all over again and made a difference in other people lives towards the end of hers. Either way, it's a shame that the BBC discontinued the show after two seasons. It is a true gem and I am delighted to see it for the first time ... even if I should probably remember it from days gone by! This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) and comes with the Special Features of:

9 episodes on 2 discs
Interviews with Geraldine McEwan and Karl Howman
