'Let's Go To Prison: Unrated'
(Dax Shepard, Will Arnett, et al / DVD / R / (2006) 2007 / Universal)

Overview: John Lyshitski is a car stealing slacker, with a weed problem, and has been in Illinois' Rossmore State Penitentiary so many times, he knows it's entire population of both staff and cons by their fast names. Cursed with the old ill luck of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in possession of the wrong car, he's been deemed a lost cause repeat offender in the eyes of everyone else. When the heartless judge, who has been behind most of his sentences, goes to the big court house in the sky, John decides to ruin the man's legacy by having the judge's only offspring, Nelson Biederman IV, thrown in the slammer along with him.

DVD Verdict: Did you know that in prison the food is horrible, the guards are corrupt, skinheads rule the roost, and man-to-man sexual violation is rampant? It's hilarious! Just kidding. About the hilarious part, I mean. The rest is all true. All too true. And also, old news. "Let's Go To Prison" is a joke everyone has already heard before, and although on some level it's mildly amusing, mostly it's just same-old same-old.

Rich-and-spoiled Nelson Biederman IV (Arrested Development's Will Arnett) is wrongfully imprisoned by a revenge-seeking John Lyshitski (Dax Shepard), who spends most of the movie trying to make Nelson's life even worse than it already should be. Beiderman endures the torture and misery with the bewilderment of a man who's never watched "Oz," "Prison Break," or "Shawshank Redemption." Meanwhile, we're asked to laugh.

You probably won't. The only thing that's even remotely amusing is Chi McBride's Barry, and that's because he throws himself into the role like a dedicated actor who doesn't realize he's in a crappy movie. The rest of the cast (including David Koechner as a malicious prison guarad) seem benumbed. Shepard, especially, fails to act in every scene he's in, delivering each line as if it were just one more step to a paycheck. I certainly hope this movie paid off for someone, because it definitely doesn't for the audience.

In closing, yes I laughed loudly several times when viewing this movie. But, and in truth, I guess if you are or were a corrections officer at any time in your life then this is a definite must-see movie. However, if (like most of us) you have never worked in a prison then your best bet would probably be to stay away from the movie because you will not understand the jokes or the movie in full ... and I am so sorry to have to say that! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
