'Shades'
(Dervla Kirwan, Stephen Tompkinson, et al / 2-Disc / Not Rated / 2012 / Acorn Media)

Overview: Maeve (Dervla Kirwan, Ballykissangel) and Mark (Stephen Tompkinson, Wild at Heart) meet in London under unusual circumstances: both are recently deceased. Maeve was killed by a hit-and-run driver, and Mark died during a routine surgery while his wife was giving birth to their son. The two mismatched souls find themselves still in this world, thrown together in a weird and wonderful afterlife.

DVD Verdict: What a delightful, if not repetitively-episodic little gem this TV is/was! Starring Stephen Tompkinson as Mark, a man who died on the table having a simple hernia operation and the quietly beautiful Dervla Kirwan as Maeve (who died in a road accident hit-and-run), it tells the tale of how the two completely mis-matched souls come to find each other - in the still-trapped-on-Earth afterlife!

The set-up comes in the first episode, complete with the rules of what they can and cannot do, who they can and cannot talk to, and all that jazz. Basically, they can be seen and talk to everyone they didn’t know when alive! Which also means he can talk to her friends on her behalf, and vice-versa. As we progress through the series, they try to figure out the upside of being dead, of why they are still wandering the Earth, whilst looking in on their previous lives - and, for the most part, not liking what they see they have left behind!

They attend each others’ funeral, there’s a funny scene in a gay bar, but all the time Maeve is searching for the red car that mowed her down that fateful day. They even find a baby in a phone box and contemplate keeping her! A heavy episode this one. Also, Maeve’s man that was having an affair with her (as he was married) has been slung out the marital home - and is now setting up cozy with Mark's wife!!

As we progress, the final three episodes become fuller, heavier and more not-to-do-with-their-situation driven. They try to help an old couple where the husband is dying, a young couple who are getting married but have MAJOR issues with each other, and in the final episode, Maeve finally finds that owner of the red car - but not all is what it seems! Some hard choices are made come the final few minutes, and as the closing scene plays out, well, it will have you with tears in your eyes! These are all Full Screen Presentations (1:33.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
