'Peter Gabriel - Live in Athens' [Blu-ray]
(Peter Gabriel / DVD+Blu ray / NR / 2013 / Eagle Eye Media)

Overview: In October 1987 after many months on the road, it was in the elevated surroundings of the hillside open-air theatre at Lycabettus overlooking Athens that the So tour came to a climactic close. The three nights were filmed in what was the first-ever Peter Gabriel concert to be committed to film.

DVD+Blu ray Verdict: OK, it has to be pointed out that the cover art to this release is fantastic. Take a second look - do you see the three transitional poses?! Very clever and very effective.

Anyway, moving on and as a concert film, 'Live in Athens' was brilliantly shot and has now been equally brilliantly remastered. Indeed, a crystal-clear record of Gabriel and band in their mid-80s pomp could probably not now be found save for this one, of course!

We are artfully placed right in the heart of the action all the way, from the band's synchronized choreography on opening number of 'This Is The Picture', right through to the skin-pricking closer 'Biko.' In between, we're lost in music, spellbound by the spectacle, totally absorbed by the imperfection-free tightness of a band that's been on the road for so long.

Here Peter seemingly/literally "connects" with his audience in a way few performers can. He feeds off the crowd energy, and is the one artist who consistently outperforms his studio tracks with his live renditions.

Those who were fortunate enough to see PG (& his amazing team) perform during this tour ought to feel extremely blessed & privileged. There are some magical moments in his Secret World & Growing Up tour performances, but the entire POV/Live in Athens tour was TRULY MAGICAL!!

This concerts versions of 'San Jacinto,' 'Shock the Monkey,' 'No Self Control,' Mercy Street,' 'Lay Your Hands On Me' and 'In Your Eyes' are the best of all the live performances I've witnessed. 'Biko' is a close second to PG's Secret World tour.
