'DCI Banks: Aftermath'
(Stephen Thompkinson, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / 2013 / BBC Home Video)

Overview: A young woman is unconscious, bleeding from a head wound. Hiding in the cellar is her husband, ready to wield a knife at anyone who tries to enter, desperate to protect his secret. What happens next leaves one of the officers dead, the other fighting for her career and Inspector Banks with a chilling murder investigation that will test him to the limit.

DVD Verdict: Set in the beauty and tranquility of England’s Yorkshire Dales, 'DCI Banks: Aftermath' starts of slow, very slow but my goodness look out! Trust me, you will have you hand over your mouth/eyes some five minutes in, that's for sure!

Wow, never saw that coming and luckily I can say - as a fan of the genre who seemingly has seen it all unfold - there are so many well played out twists and turns even I didn't see what was up ahead. Which was VERY refreshing, let me tell you!

Anyway, the scenery sure provides a striking and contrasting backdrop in this thrilling psychological drama that brings Peter Robinson's fictional detective to the small screen for the first time.

Believe me, your interest will be held for the 90 minutes, whether you like to figure out what's going to happen of go along for the ride. It's also refreshing to see a "copper" portrayed who gets into the occasional fight and isn't that good at it.

And look out for a major twist at the 37 minute mark! Not gonna give it away but NEVER saw that coming in the slightest! Not even close. Not too sure the main two cops would have "bonded" in quite thes exual way they do so quickly, but they make it work.

The acting is also quite good. There is a fair amount of chemistry between Thompkinson (DCI Banks) and Lowe (feisty and headstrong DS Cabbot). With the exception of Sian Breckin the supporting cast did a nice job rounding out this enjoyable, and ultimately successful pilot episode.

Oh, and Barry Sloane, who has since hit U.S. primetime on ABC's Revenge as Aiden, has a memorable turn as the father of the girl who remains missing. 'Aftermath' is intense, well acted, and mightily enjoyable. It's a great introduction to the now-in-Britain long-running TV series. These are all Widescreen Presentations (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
