'Line of Duty: Series 1'
(Lennie James, Martin Compston, Neil Morissey, Gina McKee, et al / 2-Disc / NR / (2012) 2013 / Acorn Media)

Overview: Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates (Lennie James, The Walking Dead) is an exemplary cop. He’s got the best crime stats on the force and a loyal team working under him. But the head of the police anti corruption unit, Superintendent Ted Hastings (Ashes to Ashes), has his doubts about Gates. Is he really that good? And more importantly, is he really that clean?

DVD Verdict: In truth, that opening intro paragraph is only the tip of the iceberg for this incredible, has to be seen to be believed UK TV show from last year.

We open with a raid on a block of flats that has the UK's version of Special Forces waiting to get the signal to break down the suspects door and unleash retribution. They believe he is a terrorist. The young Sergeant in charge DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) gets the call sign, doubts it for a split second, but gives it to his men - who follow through. Sadly, they kill an innocent man holding his baby and so we cut next to the officer having left that sector of the force and joining the Anti Corruption task force.

A force set up only to weed out the bad cops amongst the good, suddenly he is thrown into the deep end when the greatest cop that lived - a man getting awards after awards after awards - is thrown under the bus of suspicion for "laddering." A term used for when a cop adds additional charges to those already pending on a suspect they have caught, is he guilty of laddering or is it just one man's personal attack plan?

This new-to-DVD five part British police drama 'Line of Duty' is an incredible rollercoaster of did he or didn't he, who is the woman he is seeing, why does this Anti Corruption task force want him and him alone, and all the entwined plots along the way.

In his four member private task force at TO20, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates (Lennie James) has one of Britain's favorite, loveable comedians doing the first serious role that I've ever seen him undertake, in truth. Neil Morrissey ('Men Behaving Badly') is very good in the role too, and even adds a cane to his grey-haired appearance!

Through each hour long episode the case against Gates thickens, widens, the people around him start to second guess. But his wife remains oblivious, his kids devoted to him at night when he reads books to them. But suddenly the woman he was seeing, Jackie (Gina McKee) is killed and he is found to be "owing" by the drug dealer she, well, died owing!

So as we now have Gates trying ALWAYS to do the right thing, and AC12 (the Anti Corruption squad not only closing in but in the same office, on the same floor!), and with a young kid cycling around trying to be a hard man (sticking his I-want-to-smash-his-face-in nose everywhere it doesn't belong), we get some WOW! endings to the latter episodes, trust me!

As for the actual ending of Series 1, well, I have NO idea how they can come back for Series 2, let's just put it that way! These are all Widescreen Presentations (1:85.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of Interviews with the writer, directors, and cast (47 min.) and behind-the-scenes footage (10 min.)
