'Masterpiece: Mr. Selfridge Season 2'
(Jeremy Piven, Frances O' Connor, et al / 3-DVD / NR / 2014 / PBS)

Overview: Much has changed since Selfridges first opened its doors. Five years later, Europe is on the brink of war and London is enjoying one last defiant period of hedonism and decadence. Having rocked the retail world with his pioneering new store, Mr. Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) now has his sights set on joining the establishment and rebuilding his family life.

DVD Verdict: In truth, this is really a fascinating show about a self-made entrepreneur, an American in England, who opened one of the worlds first and most successful department stores. The intrigue with the owner and his family, the stores employees and customers and the general changing world the story is set in, is well done and keeps you wanting more. I really love the clothes and sets, but that's just me.

If you didn't know, all of the storyline takes place for the most part at Selfridge's department store which is based on true facts. I particularly enjoyed watching as I have traveled a great deal and spent two weeks in England. It was simply a week off from all my London sightseeing!

Anyway, Mr. Selfridge was quite a bounder (even though he was American) and as depicted in the show had quite a few dalliances with showgirls - whilst maintaining a lovely, patient wife and four children. He even allowed his son to follow in his footsteps and become a part of the store at a young age when the boy expressed a strong desire to do so.

Here in Season 2, and not to give too much away, but Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) is more self-aware and way more contemplative with regard his past actions. Indeed, now he actually wants to put his marriage and family first; but will he be able to? Rose Selfridge (Frances O'Connor) attracts him with her Edwardian sexinesss which makes you wonder why Harry would ever stray!

Of course, Lady Mae Oxley (Katherine Kelly) smolders away, as always and Agnes (Aisling Loftus) has ideals that begin to align Henri's (Gregory Fitoussi) Frenchness! Like when they work on store designs together and make those eyes at each other!

Of course the fashions have changed as now we get new hairstyles and clothes in the second decade of the 20th century . There is a deepening of the characters as more of their backstory is revealed. You see why they are the way they are and why they do what they do. It may not give you cause for acceptance, but understanding for sure.
