'The Call: A Tribute to Michael Been' (DVD/CD)
(The Call / DVD+CD / NR / 2014 / Lightyear Entertainment)

Overview: Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club pays tribute to his late father's music with an unforgettable live performance leading his father, Michael Been's legendary band, The Call.

DVD Verdict: This simply stunning Deluxe Edition DVD+CD of The Call live is a true delight to behold - as a fan or a casual observer of great music, of course.

This Deluxe Edition includes a full length DVD of the stunning concert film with special behind the scenes bonus footage along with an exceptionally well mixed CD of the music taken from the very same show.

Robert Levon Been (of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) does an incredible job here with The Call's work and indeed his late father's journeyman history. His father, Michael sadly passed away August 19th, 2010 and having been the lead in one of the era's loudest, most powerful anthem bands this tribute - filmed at the Troubadour, L.A. is a beautiful harkening back to those delicious, small club days.

The Call - Michael Been, Tom Ferrier, Jim Goodwin and Scott Musick - got their official start in Santa Cruz, CA in 1979 and despite having their initial demos rejected by ALL the major labels, the band found themselves in demand by nearly every major producer in America.

The Call's debut album was ultimately produced by Hugh Padgham (David Bowie) and the band were suddenly opening acts for major artists including Peter Gabriel and Simple Minds. The rest, as they say, is history.

Indeed, Peter Gabriel once said that The Call was the future of American music - how right, at that juncture, he was.

As Robert comes onto the darkened, smokey stage, his face is locked into a serious, far away pose. But as soon as the spotlight hits him, and the fans roar, he cracks a smile and breaks into a stunning, 'Everywhere I Go.' As we progress, and the stage lights turn blue we get an emotionally raw, 'I Don't Wanna' and later with darting red lights we get, 'Red Moon.' The show brings forth the band's mainstream hits later, of course, in both 'Let The Day Begin' and the always-great-to-hear 'The walls Come Down.'

Filmed on April 19th, 2013, Robert not only gave his all, and us chills listening to the same vocal tones in his voice to that of his iconic father, but he was also using his fathers very same iconic bass guitar! The Call were on stage, with everyone brought together for the first time in over 20 years - and man, does it sound crisp, incredible, and just so damn perfect! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
