'MIKA - Sinfonia Pop' [Blu-ray]
(MIKA / Blu-ray / NR / 2016 / Eagle Rock)

Overview: Filmed in the elegant surroundings of the 19th century Teatro Sociale in Como, Italy, this amazing show features MIKA performing all his best-loved songs accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by Simon Leclerc.

Blu ray Verdict: For those not in the know, the uber talented, and highly under-rated MIKA (born Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr.) is a British singer and songwriter.

After recording his first extended play, Dodgy Holiday, MIKA was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2007 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2007. MIKA released his first full-length studio album, Life in Cartoon Motion, on Island Records in 2007, which sold more than 5.6 million copies worldwide and helped MIKA win a Brit Award—winning Best British Breakthrough act, and also receive a Grammy Award nomination.

In 2006, MIKA started up his company, Dodgy Holiday Tours Limited and just two years later released his second extended play, Songs for Sorrow, of which limited edition copies are now sold out worldwide. In 2009 MIKA released his second studio album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, and followed that up with his third album, The Origin of Love three years later. His latest album, No Place in Heaven, was released 15 June 2015.

Interestingly, and now knowing that his last two aforementioned albums were both a more simplistic pop, less layered than the albums that had begun his career, that is exactly the feel for his brand new, and truly wonderful Blu-ray, entitled Sinfonia Pop.

As noted in the Overview, Sinfonia Pop was filmed in the elegant surroundings of the 19th century Teatro Sociale in Como, Italy. Boy, and does it look beautiful. This amazing show features MIKA performing all his best-loved songs accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by Simon Leclerc. The show is a perfect fusion of pop and orchestral and includes tracks from his most recent album, the critically acclaimed No Place In Heaven, alongside hits from across his hugely successful career.

As ever, MIKA is a charming and amiable host and is clearly in his element interacting with the orchestra and conductor Simon Leclerc. Simply put, MIKA is a genius! I saw him in concert at the Chicago Metro back in 2007 and he was fun, vibrant, chatty, and his vocal performances were both incredible and amazing! If you like his albums you have got to see this live Blu-ray performance. But, once you've seen him live, whether it be in person or via this Blu-ray, you'll want to see him again - and again! But, be further warned, because when compared to the live performances, the studio versions of his songs will seem rather flat to you thereafter!

TRACKLISTING - 1) Overture 2) Underwater 3) Boum Boum Boum 4) Rain 5) Last Party 6) Overrated 7) Any Other World 8) Love You When I'm Drunk 9) Ordinary Man 10) Heroes 11) Toy Boy 12) Grace Kelly 13) Over My Shoulder 14) Good Guys 15) Make You Happy 16) Happy Ending 17) Origin Of Love 18) Relax, Take It Easy 19) Elle Me Dit 20) Love Today 21) Stardust

This is a magical performance captured in beautiful surroundings and not to be missed. This is a Widescreen (1.85:1) Presentation enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Bonus Features of Interviews with both MIKA and conductor, Simon Leelere.
