'Hiroshima - The Complete Mini-Series Event'
(DVD / NR / (1995) 2016 / Mill Creek Entertainment)

Overview: Beginning in the frenzied final months of World War II, Hiroshima rockets back and forth between Truman, Churchill and Hirohito to reach behind the headlines and tell the story of the men and women - both public and private - whose lives and careers would be forever changed by this event, creating a balanced portrait of the political, moral and above all, human cost of this historical decision.

DVD Verdict: Starring Wesley Addy (Network), Saul Rubinek (Unforgiven), Kenneth Welsh (The Day After Tomorrow), David Gow (I'm Not There), Tatsuo Matsumura (Madadayo), George Robertson (JFK), Naohiko Umewaka (Ondine's Curse), Richard Masur (The Thing), and Kôji Takahashi (Godzilla vs. Biollante), and Nominated for 2 Primetime Emmy®s, 'Hiroshima - The Complete Mini-Series Event' is an incredible movie that depicts just what went on from start to finish.

Over 50 years later, American emotions still run high about our use of nuclear weapons against Japan; the recent backlash against the Smithsonian exhibit is proof. This film is a nuanced, balanced, objective treatment with, as far as I can tell, remarkable historical accuracy. One sees just how simplistic and myopic the leaders of both sides were as they made (or avoided making) momentous decisions that affected the entire future of the human race. The one voice of reason, scientist Leo Szilard, is brushed off with hardly a hearing.

The film deftly mixes historical footage with re-enacted scenes using actors. Normally this sort of thing is rather jarring, but here it works. Even the transitions between the real Truman in newsreel footage and the actor playing him work well.

This film is an effective indictment of our human propensity to place enormous powers in the hands of just a few individuals. I doubt any American producer could have made it. Ergo, I think it no coincidence that it wasn't produced in the US. 'Hiroshima - The Complete Mini-Series Event' weaves an unforgettable tapestry of all these events which led to the decision which would have indelibly change the course of human destiny. It is a must watch, for both Historians that think they know all there is to know, and for the uninitiated who are just now beginning to learn more about it. With a running time of three hours and 6 minutes, this is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
