'Condorito: The Movie'
(Omar Chaparro, Jessica Cediel, Coco Legrand, Cristián de la Fuente, Jay Mammon, et al / DVD / PG / 2018 / Lionsgate Films)

Overview: The beloved comic strip is now a laugh-filled movie adventure for the whole family. Condorito, a fun-loving, featherbrained condor, is finally ready to propose to his girlfriend, Yayita.

But before Condorito pops the question, Yayita's mother, Tremebunda, is abducted by evil aliens. Now, Condorito and his nephew, Chicky, must rocket into space on a hilarious quest to rescue Tremebunda and save planet Earth.

DVD Verdict: For those not in the know about Condorito, well, you might struggle to get everything that is happening on screen. That said, this highly colorful, fun and always on the go movie is based on the classic comic book series of the same name, "Condorito".

It features all of the main characters of this series originally published in Chile, and was something that I actually can say I grew up reading as a wee lad. The character of Condorito is chock full of every day gags and humor, but being as this is suited more for a Latin-American audience, well, some of the noted humor proved to be overly complicated to translate to some of my little friends here watching along with me.

In truth, here in 'Condorito: The Movie,' we rarely see Condorito involved in large story lines, as moreover it's a character (and a universe) that works better when its self-contained to gags aplenty.

Nonetheless, it's an enjoyable, familiar comedy, well, and again, at least for Latin-Americans. Maybe someone outside the specific demographic will struggle to get any of the jokes as they are, most probably, lost in translation.

As for the colorful animation, that's really well done and has turned out to be an acceptable adaptation of its source material. The plot is a bit too childish (if only my wee ones had been Latin-American) and the CGI was quite average, but there was more than one scene where it managed to make me chuckle in the same way the comic did.

But, and in closing, it's definitely worth purchasing, if only for it's rather delightful run time of 89 minutes (which is very rare for an animated movie these days). And for those viewers who grew up reading the much adored Condorito comic, this will definitely be an interesting watch. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with both Spanish and English Subtitles.
