'The Art of the Shine'
(DVD / PG-13 / 2018 / PBS)

Overview: Meet the men and women who make their living cleaning our shoes. From the brash street shiners of New York City, to the masked shoe shine boys of La Paz, 'The Art of the Shine' travels the world to give you an insider's view of this overlooked profession.

DVD Verdict: There are a lot of opinions when it comes to the best way to shine a shoe. Everyone has their own unique twist from using spit to using a lighter to burn the top coat of polish (cool, although potentially dangerous).

In in PBS's new documentary, 'The Art of the Shine,' we all get to discover that despite being literally and figuratively 'looked down upon' by society, shoe shiners universally take great pride in their work.

Furthermore, 'The Art of the Shine' introduces you to the people who do this job and allows you to see the world through their eyes. Indeed, unsurprisingly, they like the freedom that comes with being their own bosses and enjoy interacting with customers who always walk away happy.

Following these "Shiners", we look in on a group of one guy and three gals who all met in alcohol rehab and set up shop in fancy men’s stores. There's also a guy in Tokyo who charges $100 to shine shoes (usually $10,000 shoes) and takes a hour to do it!

There's also a single mother of three children who tries to make a living shining shoes in La Paz, a city where the men “shiners” wear masks to conceal their faces from embarrassment!

People around the world have turned to shoe shining to provide for themselves and their families. These are their stories. Step into their world. You'll never look at a shoe shiner the same way again! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
