'WWII - Through The Battles'
(5-Disc DVD / NR / 2018 / Mill Creek Entertainment)

Overview: 'WWII - Through The Battles' covers over 20 hours of Historical Documentaries.

DVD Verdict: First up is WAR IN THE PACIFIC, where this amazing documentary chronicles the compelling events that led up to Japan's surprise bombing of the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and depicts the numerous air, land and sea battles that unfolded from 1942 until the fall of the Japanese empire in 1945.

The priceless documentary footage compiled in this collection, sets you squarely in the center of the conflict and reveals the bravery, heroism and sacrifice that was the hallmark of the men and women of our armed forces during their service in World War II.

It includes: The Pacific in Eruption; Awakening in the Pacific; The Rise of the Japanese Empire; America Goes to War in the Pacific; The U.S. and the Philippines; The Navy Holds - 1942; Guadalcanal: America's First Offensive; War in the North: The Aleutians; The Road Back: New Guinea; Up the Solomon's Ladder: Bougainville; Attack in the Central Pacific: Makin and Tarawa; The War at Sea; Speeding Up the Attack: The Marshalls; Stepping Stones to the Philippines; Battle for the Marianas; The War in the China - Burma - India Theatre; Palau: The Fight for Bloody Nose Ridge; MacArthur Returns to the Philippines; Bloody Iwo; At Japan's Doorstep: Okinawa; The Air War on Japan; The Surrender and Occupation of Japan; Shifting Tides in the Orient, and War in Korea.

This is an old production, so it has some contemporary cultural and political references, which in no-way is detrimental to the film. It is also a very long documentary, so it is easy to lose perspective of the time-sequence of events. However, it is a good idea to see it many times, it gets better every time.

Then comes D-DAY: THE INVASION – MARCH TO VICTORY where we follow the events and milestones leading up to the infamous D-Day in this prolific documentary collection featuring rare and never-before-seen archival video footage and insightful narration chronicling the most important battle the Allies and Germans ever fought.

However, and I am sad to report, that not only are large portions of the footage from training exercises, but the background music could not have been worse - and should have been left out altogether!

The dialogue suffers from the vocalization of someone who seems either drunk or asleep and rolls out with barely a single accurate statement.

While this is certainly an engrossing three-part entry into this box-set collection, it most assuredly needed much more TLC in its production values and overall footage.

Lastly we get THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM – THE MAJOR BATTLES OF WWII, where viewers are taken to the front lines of the European, Pacific and African theaters of the deadliest conflict in human history.

Entire hours are devoted to the great battles that would define the era and the devastating final conclusion that would introduce the world to the terrible possibilities that exist with atomic weaponry.

This comprehensive 10-part series chronicles the second half of this global military conflict in a masterfully scripted presentation filled with rare and authentic archive footage.

Featuring rare and never-before-seen footage from the most poignant battles throughout the rest of WWII, and with over 8 hours of in-depth documentary features included, this two-part series is a real war chest gem in the Mill Creek Entertainment crown.
