'Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season'
(Courtney Cox, Dan Byrd, Busy Philipps, et al / 3-Disc DVD / PG / 2011 / ABC Studios)

Overview: Jules Cobb‘s learning that the idea of family isn‘t always so traditional on her not so quiet Florida cul-de-sac. Together with her teenage son, friends, neighbors and even ex-husband, the dysfunctional, yet supportive extended family manages the next stages of their lives together.

DVD Verdict: WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS COMING! ... "Penny can!" Sorry, you'll know what I'm talking about come the end of this second season! Anyway, for my money, 'Cougar Town' is the best comedy since 'Everybody Loves Raymond.' The cast is incredible. Each character has his or her own ineffable charm. The jokes come out of nowhere and are worth every penny! (pun intended!)

The half hour goes by fast and now that it's on DVD with no commercials, well, it goes even faster! I love having all the episodes in one place to watch whenever I want to. And this is what I just did for 'Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season' and boy, what another GREAT season. Indeed, the return of the cul-de-sac crew that have secrets, fun, and tale tell winks and smirks galore is a handwringing experience!

Courteney Cox leads an all-star cast here as Jules Cobb, who along with Christa Miller as Ellie Torres, Busy Phillips as Laurie Keller, Brian Van Holt as Bobby Cobb, Dan Byrd as Travis Cobb, Ian Gomez as Andy Torres, and Josh Hopkins as Grayson Ellis bring their A-game every episode. Seriously, there just isn't a bad, unfunny episode in the bunch off 22!

And as this is the second season one of the major changes is Travis's departure for college. A development that leaves Jules (Cox) with a bad case of Empty Nest Syndrome! But, you may want to know that he actually only moves 20 minutes away and so Dan Byrd remains a regular cast member! Then we see that seemingly always-single, she's now seeing Grayson (Hopkins) - which goes a long way in explaining the ever-changing title card (see one of the special features included on this wonderful DVD box-set.)

This second season also allows us to bring forth a few newer characters such as Tom (played by Bob Clendenin), a creepy neighbor who (overly) wants to be part of the cul-de-sac crew, and Travis' football roommate Kevin, played by Lamarcus Tinker.

And yes, it was true that a so-called (kinda) 'Friends' reunion did occurs in this season - when a guest appearance by Jennifer Aniston sprang to life. In "All Mixed Up." a very nicely done episode, Aniston spreads her comedic wings once again as a Shrink named Glenn that Jules goes to see. Could being a more regular cast member be far off, we ask ourselves?!

My Top 3 episodes are: "Little Girls Blues," and features Travis bringing home his new girlfriend Kirsten (played delightfully by Collette Wolfe) and we watch as Jules decides whether she likes her or not; then there's "Cry To Me," and it's Valentine's Day and Jules wants Grayson to communicate his feelings towards her; and finally I loved "Baby's a Rock `N' Roller," where Jules wants to prove to Ellie that having a baby in her twenties is difficult!

In closing, I think that the writers did a great job with character development, but don't worry as 'Cougar Town' is one of those shows that even if you are a newbie to it you can jump straight in and enjoy. So, don't worry, even if you have never watched the show before, come splash around in these highly comedic waters - you'll LOVE it! [RT] These are all Full-Screen Presentations (1.85:1), and the 3-disc set features all the 22 hilarious fun-filled episodes, along with exciting never-before-seen bonus features!
