'Discover the Ancient Art -Tai Chi & Qi Gong'
(Master Jian Liu Jun / DVD / NR / 2012 / True Mind)

Overview: Internationally renowned Tai Chi Master Jian Liu Jun shares his deep understanding of the principles of Tai Chi Chuan (literally, "supreme ultimate fist") in the first DVD, and then he and Akli Hammadi give a comprehensive guide to understanding and learning the 4,000-year-old techniques of Qi Gong, the Chinese practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation.

DVD Verdict: As soon as this DVD starts you know you're onto something good. Not only is it well constructed, easy to understand and listen to, but Tai Chi Master Jian Liu Jun is experienced and calming to behold.

'Tai Chi - Discover the Ancient Art' begins with a documentary style explanation of the history and meaning of Tai Chi. I actually learnt so much more about Tai Chi. More than I could have dreamed I would, in all honesty. Sure the British voice over is a little "weird," but you get used to it, trust me!

The movements are then explained, several times, incorporating even a split screen version so you can see front to back. Very nice, very clever. Very appreciated. Indeed, from the main screen you can opt to watch “all” or page through the introduction, different forms and spirals.

Spiral Movements form the basis of all Tai Chi Chuan, and in this feature-length program, Master Jian Liu Jun focuses on them as he teaches the Yi Ying, Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, the Eight Trigrams, Spiral Movements and the Figure 8. The Figure 8 is a short form, which is ideal for learning the essential Tai Chi techniques. It is also one of the forms used in Chen style Tai Chi competitions.

Incorporating slow meditative body movements that can improve mood, enhance relaxation and reduce stress, Tai Chi has fans worldwide proclaiming its advantages. Indeed, and amazingly, this past June the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease published a study revealing Tai Chi can do much more and improve memory and thinking skills for seniors!

Much like the the Tai Chi DVD, as soon as this Qi Gong DVD starts you also know you're onto something good. It is again, as expected well constructed, easy to understand and listen to, and Tai Chi Master Jian Liu Jun and this time around Akli Hammadi are both experienced and calming to behold.

'Qi Gong - Discover the Ancient Art' (a 2-disc DVD set that also includes a Comprehensive 3 Hour Guide) is laid out very similar to the Tai Chi DVD, with an explanation of the history, the how and why of Qi Gong, there are even some of the same faces - which makes sense, I guess!

This is truly a comprehensive guide to understanding and learning the 4,000-year-old techniques of Qi Gong first, but subsequenly the Chinese practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation.

Qi Gong is practiced throughout China and worldwide, and is believed to help develop human potential, allow access to higher realms of awareness and awaken one’s “true nature.” Over the course of three hours, distinguished martial arts teacher, Master Jian Liu Jun demonstrates a broad range of Qi Gong techniques. Akli Hammadi, a Qi Gong instructor for more than 15 years and a federal monitor for the Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong Federation, guides you through each movement.

Disc 1 provides an introduction to Chinese philosophy and the techniques required to execute the 18 Tai Chi Qi Gong movements. Disc 2 goes deeper into the movements, exploring the 8 Pieces of Brocade and the 5 Animals. These are all Full-Screen Presentations (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
