'Secrets of Britain's Great Cathedrals'
(3-Disc DVD / NR / 2019 / PBS)

Overview: Dominating the landscape for centuries, ancient cathedrals and abbeys reflect Britain's turbulent history through their architectural grandeur.

'Secrets of Britain's Great Cathedrals' explores cathedrals and abbeys found throughout England and Wales, featuring interviews with historians and experts and breathtaking footage filming their legendary facades and soaring interior spaces.

DVD Verdict: Featuring interviews with historians and experts, the 8 episodes with bonus content combine on a 1,500-mile journey, traveling from Durham Cathedral in the north, to Canterbury Cathedral in the south, and across the length of Wales.

Plus, of course, the iconic landmarks of the great city of London, St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

Taking a deeper look into some of these wondrous landmarks, the one on St Paul's Cathedral is breathtaking. Now, sure, yes, they are all breathtaking with regard how they are captured here for our visual delight, but this one, to me, stands out magnificently.

St Paul's Cathedral, London, is an Anglican cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of London and the mother church of the Diocese of London. It sits on Ludgate Hill at the highest point of the City of London and is a Grade I listed building.

Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. The present cathedral, dating from the late 17th century, was designed in the English Baroque style by Sir Christopher Wren. Its construction, completed in Wren's lifetime, was part of a major rebuilding program in the City after the Great Fire of London.

The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognizable sights of London. Its dome, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches, has dominated the skyline for over 300 years.

At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1967. The dome is among the highest in the world. St Paul's is the second-largest church building in area in the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral.

Producer and director Peter Beveridge has done outstanding work here with this series and it is also highlighted within the ariel drone work brought to the incredible fore in Canterbury Cathedral.

Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site.

Indeed, it is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

The origins of Canterbury Cathedral go back to 597AD when Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great, arrived on the coast of Kent as a missionary. Just watching how the drone showcases the nooks and crannies of this old, bestowed in time work of masonry art is worth the price of the DVD set alone, trust me.

Running at an impressive 432 minutes on 3 discs, with unprecedented access behind the walls of these spectacular buildings, 'Secrets of Britain's Great Cathedrals' gives an incredible insight into the most influential cathedrals, abbeys and bishops' palaces in the country. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Bonus Feature of:
