She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is a Television Hall of Fame inductee (class of 1995), and a Disney Legend (class of 2009).
On this incredible (no other word sums it up more perfectly) new 4-Disc Box-Set from Mill Creek Entertainment, we first get a look at Betty in the much revered Life With Elizabeth.
The show was the day to day events in the lives of a newly married couple where each episode consisted of three short, unrelated sketches in which characters often break the imaginary fourth wall.
For my money, this is a classic sitcom. The characters are limited in number, and the plot is always simple, but the acting and writing are very good. Most of the episodes revolve around Elizabeth's sense of humor. Her husband is the straight man usually. It is worth watching, unlike many shows today.
My two favorite episodes here are when Alvin is out practicing his golf swing in his front yard and he accidentally hits it through a neighbor's car windshield! And when Elizabeth makes the local gopher … her pet!
The gimmicks with the announcer ("Hi Elizabeth, what are ya knitting there?") are funny, and Betty is a reassuring presence throughout, as I'm sure you all know by now.
In the late '50s Betty then undertook Date With The Angels, where new bride Vickie and her insurance salesman husband Gus involve their friends and neighbors in a variety of comic episodes.
The situations are funny, and it is obvious that the writers were striving to make the show a little bit different from the plethora of family sitcoms around at the time.
Several shows are set in places other than the home to give the show some scope. There is a wonderful segment set entirely on a boardwalk amusement park with a rich list of character actors along for the ride!
Also, Betty sings in several of these shows on this DVD and so my only question is why didn't she sing more on her other series? She has a beautiful singing voice that is one of the pleasant surprises of this fine series.
Finally, after all that black and white goodness we get an Exclusive Documentary Featurette that, for the most part recounts the history of Betty White.
Never filling in too many blanks we didn't already know, as fans, it is, however, a warm, enthralling, and just look at one of Hollywood's greatest actors. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
