'Terra Formars: Special Edition' [Blu-ray]
(Rinko Kikuchi, Rila Fukushima, Shun Oguri, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1999) 2019 / Arrow Films UK)

Overview: In an attempt to colonize Mars, 21st century scientists seed the planet with algae to absorb sun light and purify the atmosphere, and cockroaches who in turn spread the algae as they feed.

500 years later, the first manned mission to Mars loses contact with Earth, and a second ship is sent to investigate.

Blu-ray Verdict: Not a bad movie for the scope that it was created and filmed within, here we are now in the crowded 21st century where we laid out green (terraform) areas on Mars so human life could inhabit it.

Basically put, we gave it moss and cockroaches! A crew of selected criminals (why it is always criminals?!) and others go to Mars in 2599 to eliminate the now over-sized (quite literally) roach problem!

Of course, when they get there they discover the roaches are large, humanoid, and bloody well aggressive. But, rather than just kill them with conventional weapons, the crew resorts to injecting themselves with the DNA of various insects to give themselves a superpower (!) in order to make their superpower seem feasible!

Come on now, stay with me here. Sure there's no Caspar Van Dien with a machine gun, winning every battle against the bugs, even though he had no logistical right to, but what we do have are a band of actors/characters that do their very best.

Containing some nice special effect, all be they not of the highest level, 'Terra Formars' could benefit from some up to dat CGI, sure, but overall the storyline holds up.

Based on the popular Manga series of the same name, 'Terra Formars' is an action-packed space adventure brought to life by one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary filmmakers. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
