'The Highway Rat'
(David Tennant, Rob Brydon, Frances de la Tour, et al / DVD / G / 2019 / PBS)

Overview: Based on the beloved children's book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, 'The Highway Rat' tells the tale of a ravenous rat who craves buns, cookies, and all sweet things.

Tearing along the highway, he searches for sugary treats to steal. But will his sweet tooth lead him to a sticky end?

This swashbuckling tale is an animated film the whole family will enjoy.

DVD Verdict: In what was the BBC's Christmas animation treat this past holiday season, 'The Highway Rat' is a pleasure to watch from start to finish.

Sadly only running at 25 minutes, Julia Donaldson's buck toothed rodent on a horse whose life is one long feast is still an enjoyable tale for both young and only.

Indeed, younger folks will certainly like it as it follows on the footsteps of other Donaldson books that have been adapted for animation during the aforementioned festive UK period.

As for the tale to hand, with his sword the infamous Highway Rat (Tennant) steals sweets, chocolates, cakes and pastries and always with the resounding speech of: Give me your sweets and your lollies! Give me your toffees and chews!

So, as you can well imagine, and especially for a sweet-toothed fella, life is pretty good for this Highway Rat. I mean, sure, he's mean in ways I wish he wasn't, like when he steals hay from his own horse, but that all sets us viewers up for what's to come.

Also, a lot of the other animals in the forest are suffering and getting thinner as the rat gets fat so something needs to change - and fast!

Funnily enough, the Highway Rat always seems to be disappointed that food that looks like confectionary turns out to be vegetables, fruits or nuts!

So, food that is actually good for him is a no-no ... but he still steals it!

This is another sweet animated tale narrated by Rob Brydon with David Tennant voicing the Highway Rat. Moreover, it has an anti obesity message clearly on show at all times: Eat in moderation and never steal from the mouths of those less fortunate! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
