'Cielo'
(DVD / NR / (2017) 2019 / MVD Visual)

Overview: 'Cielo' is a cinematic reverie on the crazy beauty of the night sky, as experienced in the Atacama Desert, Chile, one of the best places on our planet to explore and contemplate its splendor.

DVD Verdict: Alison McAlpine's film drifts between science and spirituality, the arid land, desert shores and lush galaxies, expanding the limits of our imaginations.

From planet hunters and strophysicists in the Atacama's astronomical observatories to the desert dwellers who work the land and sea, all share their evocative visions of the stars and planets, their mythic stories and existential queries with remarkable openness and a contagious sense of wonder.

Beautifully shot, wonderfully strange, 'Cielo' is a preciously portrayed collection of perspectives held by those who appreciate the beauty and wonder of the sky like no city-dweller can.

The quiet moments here within the 70 minutes were the best moments. Leaving me to ponder all there is to fear and all there is to cherish from the infinite unknowns of the universe.

It is inspiring, relaxing and breathtaking. The combination of characters and the images of the sky leaves you wanting to explore Chile and the Atacama desert.

Indeed, my favorite conversation of all the ones shown was between the two algae collectors in Los Pozos, Huasco. Just listening to them converse, to speculate, to dream was one of the most heartwarming conversations that I've had the pleasure to "eavesdrop in on" for many a year.

A love poem for the night sky, 'Cielo' transports us to a space, quiet and calm, within which we are invited to ponder the infinite and unknown. This is a Standard Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
