'Pagan Warrior'
(Sarah T. Cohen, Tara McGowran, Louisa Warren, et al / DVD / R / (2019) 2020 / Mill Creek Entertainment)

Overview: After a savage gang of warriors invade a castle, murdering all in sight, one surviving man calls upon Krampus, the Yule devil to come to exact revenge for his family.

DVD: A C-movie of the highest quality, 'Pagan Warrior' is set amid the lush greenery of the English countryside. The historic horror title sees a savage gang of Vikings invade a Saxon castle, murdering all in sight. However, a sole survivor, with the aid of some witches, summons a demonic spirit to exact revenge.

Actually knowing a little bit about the folklore of this movie itself, Director Louisa Warren has gone on record as saying she appreciated that the movie "might be a little different to other Christmas films coming out" at that time, but that it wasn't all in her hands come the final moments.

And sure, whilst the yuletide references don’t exactly come thick and fast ('Pagan Warrior' also looks as if it were shot in summer), the spirit in question is the Krampus, European folklore’s half-goat, half-demon monster that is the satanic, child-punishing yin to Santa Claus’ jolly, present-giving yang!

In fairness, the film was originally titled 'Krampus Vs. Vikings,' but ITN Distribution — the genre label that purchased the film rights — made the switch themselves.

Anyhoo, and moving on, history buffs might want to ensure they’re sitting down or have a stiff drink in their hand before watching 'Pagan Warrior,' with the onscreen date at the start stating it is 1812 -- almost a thousand years AFTER Vikings and Saxons last waged war on English shores!

But, and as Warren herself has since said, "The thing is with these films, you’ve got to use your imagination," and that is why 'Pagan Warrior' ranks very highly for me amongst the plethora of C-movies out there today. This is a Widescreen Presentation (2.35:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
