'The UnXplained: Season 1'
(William Shatner / DVD / NR / 2020 / LGF)

Overview: Hosted and executive produced by Golden Globe®- and Primetime Emmy Award®-winning actor, William Shatner, this hit series from HISTORY® tackles subjects that have mystified mankind for centuries — from Japan’s ominous “Suicide Forest” to strange creatures like the Chupacabra to bizarre Voodoo rituals.

DVD Verdict: William Shatner as narrator and host lends just the right aura of skepticism intertwined with intrigue here in this quite wondrous, and ever-engrossing 'The unexplained: Season 1.'

Between Shatner's commentary we see dramatic re-enactments of past events and/or we tour actual places the events occurred. We meet people who experienced those events. We hear background information and opinion from experts who have studied the events.

There were a handful of stories in the debut episode which drew me instantly in. Indeed, each one was riveting and I found myself clicking to the next episode relatively quickly just as the prior one had finished (I'm sure you will too).

In the first episode, Evil Places, Shatner explores some deadly forests, haunted houses, and even mountains where visitors never return alive! Are there such things as "evil places"? is the question being asked here.

Other episode titles include Mysterious Structures, Strange Creatures, Unnatural Nature, Bizarre Rituals, Life Beyond Death, Mysteries of the Mind, Incredible Survivors, The Oak Island Curse and Dark Prophecies.

Out of all of them, The Oak Island Curse is an ongoing, and long running TV show that is now eight seasons in (and still has no resolve in sight), but the other two that stood out for me here personally were both Incredible Survivors and Life Beyond Death.

In the former, How do some people live through the impossible? is the question being asked. Whether it's plane crashes, bearing freezing temperatures, or performing superhuman feats while in danger, these remarkable tales of human survival force us to reconsider what we know about our own will to live.

Do we have a hidden reserve of inexplicable energy locked away inside us that only gets released when the situation calls for it, perhaps?

In the latter, perhaps the greatest unexplained mystery of all is: what happens to us after we die? Perhaps clues to the answer lie in unusual cases of near-death experience, reincarnation, and how memories can be passed from organ donors to transplant recipients.

The question asked here is: Are these phenomena figments of our collective imagination, or could they be real? Fascinating from start to finish, this episode, along with the ten others make for an intriguing and, at times (many times), eye-opening learning experience.

FYI: The show airs Friday evenings on the History channel. Check it out because it's well worth it and highly entertaining. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.

Delving deep into the HISTORY® series that explores unexplainable phenomena including ancient cities, mysterious structures, bizarre rituals, and extraterrestrial sightings, 'The UnXplained: Season 1' DVD will be available March 24th, 2002 (from LGF) for the suggested retail price of $14.98.
