'Islands of Wonder'
(DVD / PG / 2020 / PBS)

Overview: Journey to three of the most exotic, mysterious and remote islands on Earth: Madagascar, Borneo and Hawaii. These isolated and iconic tropical islands harbor remarkable wildlife and human castaways found nowhere else on Earth.

In a rapidly changing world, these fragile islands are a vital gauge for the health of our planet.

DVD Verdict: From Executive Producer Mark Brownlow, Directed by Sara Douglas, Will Ridgeon, and Evie Wright, and Narrated by Michael J. Hayes, this near-three hour cinematic wonderment is one for all the family to sit down and enjoy.

Madagascar: We journey across ancient Madagascar, the strangest and oldest island on Earth, famed for its lemurs. Over millennia it has given rise to more unique wildlife than any other island.

Amongst other things, we learn that Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean and is also the world's second-largest island country.

Borneo: Here, we get a journey from Borneo’s rich coral reefs, through lush jungles to its mountainous heart, which reveals it is no paradise, and the struggles to survive are the secret to a greater variety of life than found on than almost any other island; from orangutans to sun bears and flying snakes.

Along the way we also learn that Borneo, a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago, is shared by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan and the tiny nation of Brunei.

It’s known for its beaches and ancient, biodiverse rainforest, home to wildlife including the aforementioned orangutans and rather beautiful clouded leopards.

Hawaii: The most remote island chain in the world, is a wondrous archipelago that has offered sanctuary for that life that have reached its tropical shores.

From humpback whales to waterfall-climbing fish, carnivorous caterpillars and albatross, it’s home to an extraordinary wealth of wildlife.

Aside from a whole host of fascinating insight in Hawaii - which is, of course, also a state of the United States of America in the Pacific Ocean - it is the only U.S. state outside North America, as mentioned, the only island state, and the only state in the tropics. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
