Starting from the point of inspiration, it should be known that composer Jocelyn Pook is, well, simply put ... a phenomenal musician and vocalist and is a trailblazing pioneer in her genre. Here, on this new Merchant of Venice score her music admirably conveys a deep sadness, creating a mood of contemplative introspection - as such was the age. But this would not be a complete review if both Andreas Scholl and young Hayley Westerna were overlooked, for their collective singing forms are stunningly apt for this musical visage of Elizabethan England. Ms. Pook's Merchant of Venice score is a masterpiece of the highest order and fully deserves your attention.
