Insider Gossip
Welcome to The Mysterious Bookshop!

Book shops like this aren't supposed to exist anymore, certainly not in expensive Manhattan real estate, but here The Mysterious Bookshop is, selling an unequaled collection of new, used and rare mystery, suspense, crime and detective titles.

The charming space holds no shortage of new titles, but the collection of rare books and signed first editions is the most interesting.

Otto Penzler is the proprietor of 'The Mysterious Bookshop' in New York City, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 13, 2009. He was the publisher of The Armchair Detective, the Edgar_winning quarterly journal devoted to the study of mystery and suspense fiction, for seventeen years. Mr. Penzler was the founder of The Mysterious Press and also created the publishing firms of Otto Penzler Books and The Armchair Detective Library.

He currently has imprints at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the United States and Atlantic Books in the U.K., publishing such authors as Thomas H. Cook, Andrew Klavan, Thomas Perry and Joyce Carol Oates. And, before they went out of business, he also wrote a weekly column, "The Crime Scene," for The New York Sun.

In 1977, he won an Edgar Award for the Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection. The Mystery Writers of America gave him the prestigious Ellery Queen Award in 1994 for his exceptional contributions to the publishing field. He was also honored with its highest non-writing award, the Raven, in 2003.

Mr. Penzler's most recent publications are The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps (Vintage), The Vicious Circle and Uncertain Endings (Pegasus), Dead Man’s Hand (Harcourt), and now the just-released The Lineup: The World's Greatest Crime Writers Tell the Inside Story of Their Greatest Detectives (Little, Brown).
