'Dark Blue'
(Kurt Russell, Ving Rhames / R / 97 mins / Intermedia)

Overview: Set in Los Angeles during the Rodney King trial, two police officers Kurt Russell, Scott Speedman) investigate a robbery-homicide that was racially motivated. Ving Rhames plays the cops' boss.

Verdict: Taking the plunge, rather like 'Training Day' set out to do, 'Dark Blue' goes where all too few films dare to venture these days — into the heart of moral darkness. Flaws and all, 'Dark Blue' has a combustible energy and yet however misjudged and evidently cobbled together in the editing room it comes across, 'Dark Blue' does have the nerve to drive right through the riots with Russell's saber-toothed bigot. This is a crackling and solidly acted — if somewhat familiar — police-corruption thriller and, above all, has a powerful Kurt Russell performance going for it also!
