'Gothika'
(Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz / R / 104 mins / Warner Bros.)

Overview:The plot of Gothika focuses on a criminal psychologist (Halle Berry) who wakes up to realize that she's been locked in her own sanitarium for a murder that she can't remember committing. While trying to figure out what's happened and separate fact from fiction, she has a nasty run-in with an angry spirit. Penélope Cruz co-stars as a fellow mental patient.

Verdict: 'Gothika' is a gloomy-doomy ghost story that gets off to a creepy start and then spirals into flat-out preposterousness! A train-wreck of a motion picture, 'Gothika' kinda plays out like 'Scary Movie' ... minus the intended laughter! In fact, it becomes possessed by an increasingly ludicrous beyond-the-grave element from which there is no rational return. The sad fact is I honestly wanted to enjoy this, but in the end it's nothing more than an overripe, Grade-C reconstitution of a Grade-B scary thriller.
